We’ve known for some time that Destiny 2’s first DLC will focus on the exiled Warlock Osiris, and thanks to a Kotaku expose from August, it seems likely to be called the Curse of Osiris. But we know a great deal more than just its name. Here’s everything we know about Destiny 2’s first expansion.

Destiny 2: Curse of Osiris release date
The Osiris DLC will be called Curse of Osiris and is due to land in December, according to this expose by Kotaku’s Destiny expert Jason Schreier.
We reckon earlier in the month is more likely than later, to exploit the run-up to the holidays and based on prior form: the original Destiny’s first expansion, The Dark Below, released on December 9. It’s also likely that the Sparrow Racing League event will return for Christmas, and Bungie don’t gain anything by having it cannibalise the launch of the DLC.
Destiny 2: Curse of Osiris Mercury setting
We might’ve guessed that we’ll be returning to Mercury in Curse of Osiris, since we know the Warlock had hideouts there. Champions of Destiny 1's Trials of Osiris got to visit one such hideout: the Lighthouse. What we might not have guessed is that, according to a possibly premature listing on the Microsoft Store, the DLC will add a whole new patrol location on Mercury, in a region called the Infinite Forest. The Lighthouse will also return as a fully-fledged social space.
Mercury featured in two Crucible maps in the original Destiny - Vertigo (above) and the Burning Shrine, which was sacred to the renegade Sunbreaker order of Titans. Vertigo is in the planet's Caloris Spires region, presumably near the Caloris Basin, where the Lighthouse and Destiny 2's Altar of Flame map are also located.
So the Infinite Forest is an entirely new region. Expect Vex structures, but it's hard to guess at anything else about its topography.
According to the Destiny grimoire, Mercury was once a garden world. Presumably, like all the inner planets, the Traveler's powers enabled humanity to terraform and inhabit it during the Golden Age. During the Collapse, the Vex undid this work within days, transforming it into one of their machine worlds. Mercury is probably now the most Vex-infested planet in the system.
Destiny 2: Curse of Osiris raid and activities
If Mercury is being added as a location, we can expect new patrol missions, adventures, and probably a new World Quest. It'll need a new planetary overseer, who will have their own reputation system. Osiris himself is a contender, but it's fair to suppose we'll meet some of his disciples during the DLC. Perhaps Brother Vance (above) will return from the original game; we also know of a disciple named Sister Faora.
That Microsoft Store listing makes mention of new gear, new cooperative activities, and new competitive multiplayer arenas. For the last two, read: strikes and PvP maps, unless "new cooperative activities" actually means a new game type. Destiny's second DLC, House of Wolves, introduced a horde mode named Prison of Elders, which doesn't yet have an equivalent in the sequel.
The Prison of Elders was added in lieu of a raid, however, and was nowhere near as much fun, so we kinda hope that doesn't happen again. Every other Destiny expansion has added a raid, and with Bungie making grand promises about content for the sequel, we're fairly confident that we'll see one in Curse of Osiris.
Destiny 2: Curse of Osiris story
Osiris's DLC is teased throughout Destiny 2. He's referenced in the lore tab of the Vigilance Wing Exotic pulse rifle, which apparently was once a reward from the Trials of Osiris, and in the 'Hack the Planet' adventure on Nessus. As you can see in this footage by TetraNinja, the ending of that adventure hints at his predicament: he's somewhere in the Vex network - presumably trapped there, if we've got to rescue him - and should have plenty to tell us about the malevolent cyborgs and their plans for the galaxy.
Though we can surely expect plenty of missions on the surface of Mercury, the idea of exploring the Vex network - a labyrinth of gates criss-crossing time and space - is a tantalising one, with plenty of possibilities. Could we see the Vex homeworld? Could we travel through or even beyond Destiny's timeline?
That MS Store listing suggests so, saying players will "journey through time and space to learn the secrets of Osiris, avert a dark future, and rebuild the ties between the legendary Warlock and his greatest student - Ikora Rey."
It's great to hear that Ikora is going to get a little attention, as she's by far the least developed of the Vanguard leaders right now.
Destiny 2: Who is Osiris?
As with all of Destiny's most interesting lore, Osiris's backstory is mostly buried in the original game's grimoire cards. Here's what you need to know.
Osiris was a prodigious Warlock who fought so viciously in the Battle of Six Fronts - one of the City's earliest and most desperate sieges - that he "appeared to be everywhere at once." Shortly thereafter, the beloved Titan Saint-14 recommended him to the Speaker as Vanguard Commander.
He served ably for a time, and the Speaker even took him as an apprentice. The story of their subsequent estrangement is told in this grimoire card, which is a classic example of Destiny's lore raising far more interesting questions than the game itself ever tackles:
"How much of a Guardian's personality and memories were true? How much had been fabricated by their Ghost? Did Guardians share particular personality traits - a willingness to yield to authority, a tendency to do anything anyone asked for the promise of uncertain reward, a blind knight-errant mentality? Had the Traveler manufactured all of [them] as living weapons?"
These questions - rather than the basic defence of the City - became Osiris's preoccupations. "And then it got worse," says the Speaker, as Osiris chased after Xur and The Nine and delved into the nature of The Darkness. This led to him prophesying the coming of Oryx, and coming "too close to understanding the Vex." As he began to invest resources the City couldn't spare into these divisive and dangerous obsessions, the Speaker felt obliged to intervene.
Osiris was exiled from the Tower along with his followers, who the Speaker describes as a cult of Guardians "who wanted a clear idea of why they were fighting, what they faced, and how they would ultimately win." Seems pretty reasonable to us, whereas the Speaker preferred them to take a lot more on faith.
The Tower doesn't know much of Osiris since his exile, so we don't either. Hopefully though, you now understand a little more about why Destiny fans - especially lore nerds - are excited to finally meet him.
Destiny 2: Curse of Osiris speculation
Finally, a pet theory of mine, with spoilers for Destiny 2's campaign (so don't read on if you haven't finished it yet).
Still with us? Okay. Consider: could Osiris replace the Speaker? Last we saw of him, he was motionless on the floor beneath Ghaul's feet, his mask discarded. The implication seems to be that he's dead - though it's not obvious how, it's not like he was shot or stabbed or anything. Anyway, there's no sign of him in the Tower after the campaign.
So the Speaker is gone, and the City needs a philosophical leader to ask questions about the nature of the Darkness and the Light. From the Speaker's own description of his disagreement with Osiris, the rogue Warlock was always more interested in these subjects than in his duties as Vanguard Commander (and indeed, more determined to get answers than the Speaker himself). Who better to don the white robes?
Osiris is clearly a divisive figure, and his succession would ruffle some feathers. But perhaps that's why we're repairing his relationship with Ikora Rey. It would also set the stage for Osiris to be a much more active Speaker than the original. Presumably, his voice actor will be easier to book for future expansions than Bill Nighy.
