Fortnite Battle Royale tips

Since there are numerous similarities to Bluehole’s behemoth, strategies that are useful in PUBG will crossover with these Fortnite Battle Royale tips. But, there are some key differences that you will need to bear in mind. These are the top Fortnite Battle Royale tips to give you the greatest chance of staying in there.

Limit the sound you make

The single most important Fortnite Battle Royale tip is to keep the decibel level to an absolute minimum. If a player nearby can detect you with some half-decent headphones, they have a significant advantage - even if you are brimming with legendary loot.

This means you should run as little as possible - running is much louder than walking or crouching, and emits noticeable puffs of smoke in your wake - and make sure your surroundings are secure when building or scavenging resources with your pickaxe. Note: other players can hear you when you are switching your weapons.

Use headphones

To turn the tables on your enemies you can invest in a decent pair of cans yourself. The game is free, so you have saved some cash to put towards some, really.

Since knowing where other players are is half the battle (royale), wearing headphones can be the difference between life and death - even if you are lacking in loot. Keep your own noise to a minimum and, when you hear another sound, be on the alert.

Be paranoid

fortnite battle royale tips

Actually, you should be on the alert at all times. This is not a game for the faint-hearted. Our big Fortnite Battle Royale tip: never relax, and always assume there is another player just round the corner, waiting to invite you to a sophisticated dinner date with their pump-action shotgun. If you hear a faint noise, wait. Then wait again. As soon as you get complacent, you will be shot dead and bumped back to the lobby screen, all anguish and frustration.

Battle royale games are as much a state of mind as they are tests of shooting skill - and Fortnite Battle Royale is no different. If you find a good piece of cover to overlook the circle’s perimeter, assume someone else has had this thought, too. If you have only just breathlessly made it into the safe zone, know that there are plenty of other players desperately scrabbling their way in there.

The Fortnite Battle Royale map is big, but it is not that big. If you are having a shoot out with someone it normally means other opportunistic players are being drawn towards you. Build walls to protect your flanks, and only go after players that represent an actual threat to you.

The circle is all that matters

One of the most important Fortnite Battle Royale tips is to always be aware of the circle, forever shrinking in size, always ready to swallow you. Every strategic decision should be made with your proximity relative to the eye of the storm in mind.

Already in the circle once the timer starts ticking down? Great - pay attention to the way in which it is shrinking. Will you be outside it shortly?

If you are down on your luck and the safe zone is a trek away, getting there is your priority. If you spot another play, and you cannot defeat them sharpish - get past them. For heaven’s sake don’t get into a protracted scrap: you might win some pride but that is worth nothing when you are dead.

Drink shield potions immediately (most of the time)

If you get this little pot of blue goodness make sure you snaffle it up, immediately. It will make a big difference to your Fortnite Battle Royale gameplay. The 50% buff the shield potion bestows in Fortnite Battle Royale lasts for the duration of the match, but, since it is a shield buff, it will not protect you from certain damage types, like falling. What’s more, you can stack two, doubling your starting max health and giving you a serious advantage.

You can acquire shields with three different items: the regular shield potion, small shield potion, and slurp juice. Regular shield potions give 50 extra shield points, up to a maximum of 100. Small shield potions give 25, up to a maximum of 50. Slurp Juice, however, comes with a double bonus: it adds 25 shield and can also heals you for 25 health points.

If you land in an area with other players it is usually best to glug those potions straight away. However if you are alone try finding less potent shields before downing your regular shield potions. That way you can get that sweet, sweet 200HP.

Only engage when you are certain of success

fortnite battle royale tips

Unlike the vast majority of multiplayer shooters, the aim of Fortnite Battle Royale is to survive, not to get kills. This is arguably the most important Fortnite Battle Royale tip to remember: you could get 98 kills and still lose.

Instead, you need to survive to the very end, and that means you need to assess carefully whether any engagement is necessary at all times. Some unwise aggro will alert the target and nearby players to your location, bringing a swift and premature end to your game.

That said, high-risk strategies can come with the rewards to match. Successfully downing your target will net you their loot, which might bolster your arsenal enough to make the difference in the final stages.

Do not loot bodies straight away

If you get a kill, it is hard not to zip over to your unfortunate victim’s corpse and loot the shower of items that have erupted from their body. Resist this temptation.

Firefights attract lots of attention; you cannot guarantee that your murderous mano-a-mano has not piqued the attention of nearby players. You are at your most vulnerable when looting; you are presenting your opponent with an easy, static target to easily blow away. Resist the urge to immediately loot. Wait for others to take the juicy bait.

Also, when looting, build around yourself while you swap out gear. This is even more important while healing or using shield potions: you never know who was watching your fight through a scope and just waiting to land an easy headshot.

Cover is destructible, always have a plan B

fortnite battle royale tips

This is a key distinction between Fortnite Battle Royale gameplay and PUBG: all cover is destructible. Do not trust it. Whenever you start to feel comfortable and hubris starts to set in, make sure you have a contingency plan or a viable, easily-accessible escape route for when things inevitably go tits up.

On the flip side, if you manage to track down a grenade or rocket launcher, they will be essential in levelling the carefully constructed fortresses and hiding spots housing the rivals around you. Big Fortnite Battle Royale tip, here: if there is any trace of sound or movement, smoke ‘em out.

Build during the final showdown, and know how to do it

The ability to build in Fortnite Battle Royale is another feature PUBG lacks, and it can come in handy, especially towards the business end of a match. It can grant you makeshift cover and help you access loot, but it is conspicuous.

Don’t be shy when it comes to building, although player-made structures stick out like a sore thumb.

However, verticality is important in Fortnite Battle Royale and the player with the high ground will always have an advantage over those sneaking behind trees or hiding in bushes. If you have the resources to do so at the endgame, build high so you have a view of the diminishing safe zone. This, combined with a strong ranged weapon, is a deadly combination.

When the circle moves and your little base is no longer in the safe zone, leave for the next zone early to establish new ground. Get used to using ‘Q’ or Mouse Button 3 to switch to building mode quickly.

Stockpile resources towards the end of the match, and learn to love wood

At all times, you want to make sure you have half an eye on building your stock of resources. In Fortnite Battle Royale you have three building materials: wood, brick, and metal in ascending order of durability. All can be farmed around the map, but make sure you aim for the flashing circles when farming to speed up the process.

New players tend to think metal is the best material to use, but this is often not the case. Metal takes longer to finish building and only spawns with 70HP, meaning players can easily shoot it down, and you with it. Wood, on the other hand, spawns with 100 HP and builds much faster (to a max of 200 HP) than brick or metal. In other words: to block bullets, or when building aggressively, you should use wood. When building a safe little hideout, use metal or brick.

Space will be tight at the end of a match, so you will looking to hold ground rather than sprint to wherever the safe zone is. If you have stumbled on some traps, now is the time to fortify your builds and take out other players trying to sneak up on you.

Fortnite Battle Royale weapons

fortnite battle royale weapons

Fortnite Battle Royale weapons come in a variety of shapes and sizes, from the trusty pistol to the barnstorming rocket launcher. But, unlike PUBG, Fortnite Battle Royale weapons have a rarity scale, as detailed below:

  • Grey: Common
  • Green: Uncommon
  • Blue: Rare
  • Purple: Epic
  • Orange: Legendary

So, how do you find Fortnite Battle Royale weapons? They tend to be concentrated in built-up areas (click to jump to our section on Fortnite Battle Royale locations), but they are not the only places they can be found. Smaller buildings and areas will have loot.

The best Fortnite Battle Royale weapons tend to be those with a long range - snipers and scoped assault rifles, mostly. Of course, it is best to have those as well as short-range shotguns to keep you covered in any situation, but you will find yourself further away from enemies in such a large map, more often than not.

Below, you will find all the Fortnite Battle Royale weapons with their possible rarity types:

Assault rifles

fortnite battle royale weapons

  • M16 (common, uncommon, rare) - the least effective assault rifle, so make sure you are in a strong position before you open fire.
  • SCAR (epic, legendary) - great for mid range, but still versatile. Look out for rarer variants with much higher damage.
  • Scoped rifle (rare, epic) - not so good at close range but one of the best weapon types in the game in all other situations.
  • Assault rifle burst (common, uncommon, rare) - recoil in Fortnite Battle Royale can be punishing, so burst fire is useful.

  • Revolver (common, uncommon, rare) - pistols are the least effective weapon type in the game, but the revolver packs higher damage than the standard pistol.
  • Pistol (common, uncommon, rare) - the trusty pistol is best supplemented with other, more powerful gear, but it has higher DPS than the revolver.
  • Silenced Pistol (Epic, Legendary) - The silenced pistol boasts high DPS and more headshot damage than assault rifles, melting unsuspecting players in seconds without alerting others.

  • Pump shotgun (common, uncommon) - great at close quarters, the pump-action shotgun has higher damage, but a slower reload.
  • Tactical shotgun (uncommon, rare, epic) - lower damage than the pump-action, but aim for the head and upper torso and this is still brutally effective up close.

  • Submachine gun (common, uncommon) - SMGs are one of the harder Fortnite Battle Royale weapons to use, unless you are a DPS player. The standard SMG is weaker but more common.
  • Tactical SMG (uncommon, rare, epic, legendary) - the tactical SMG is rarer than its sibling, but it boasts a higher magazine size and damage, if you can find it.
  • Silenced SMG (common, uncommon, rare) - These SMGs not only have higher damage than the regular and tactical SMGs, but they are silenced, too. The downside is the slower fire rate, but they are recommend over the other SMGs for their utility.

Sniper rifles

  • Bolt action sniper AWP (rare, epic, legendary) - accurate and highly damaging, but the bolt action brings with it slow reloads. Requires steadiness and concentration.
  • Semi-auto sniper (epic, legendary) - deals less damage than its bolt action sibling, but it does have a ten-round magazine which allows you to fire multiple shots. If you are great at landing headshots, this can be highly effective.

  • Rocket launcher (rare, epic, legendary) - great for destroying cover, but it will immediately alert others to your location.
  • Grenade launcher (rare, epic, legendary) - same story here, but on a smaller scale. The grenade launcher has lower damage than the rocket launcher, but it does have six rounds of ammo. It lacks the range of the RPG but can destroy a player’s base much faster if you are close enough.

Melee weapons and grenades

  • Pickaxe - the pickaxe is your starting weapon but you will not want to take it to a gunfight. Handy for sourcing building materials. Pro tip: if you want to loot quickly and not change your weapon, equip the pickaxe. Now, you will only pick up ammo and items because you cannot swap out the pickaxe.
  • Frag grenade - very useful for flushing out players in makeshift fortresses, or when you are between clips.
  • Smoke grenade - these are situational and best used in squad games where a smoke grenade can provide cover for a quick getaway or sneaky revive.
  • Boogie bomb - ever wanted to forcibly make your enemies recreate Saturday Night Fever? Well, now you can. These little beauties explode on impact and force anyone in the disco-splosion radius to ‘boogie’ for five seconds for some serious disrespect.

Fortnite Battle Royale items

fortnite battle royale items

Hear that twinkling sound nearby? That is a loot chest, and it holds various Fortnite Battle Royale items useful for battle. Although they are not confined only to chests, the best Fortnite Battle Royale items tend to be found in them. Also, look out for small green ammo boxes to make sure your best weapons do not become mere paperweights; they do not glow or produce a sound, but they tend to be close to loot chests.

Here are all of the Fortnite Battle Royale items you can find and their properties:

  • Shield potions - these confer a permanent 50% shield boost. Use them as soon as you are in a secure location.
  • Mini shield potions - these bestow 25 shield points a pop, up to a maximum of 50. Use regular shield potions to boost this to 100.
  • Slurp juice - this restores 25 health and 25 shield points. Use with bandages to bring yourself back to 100HP.
  • Bandages - more common than med kits, bandages restore 15 points of health up to 75 points.
  • Med kit - med kits heal up to 100%. They are much rarer, though, so save them for the final confrontation if you can.
  • Spike trap - place these on walls, floors, and ceilings to bait aggressive players or trick sneaky ones.
  • Launch pad - one of the most sought after and hilarious items in the game. Launch yourself into the air and redeploy your glider to land on top of unsuspecting players or escape the storm.
  • Bush - turning you into a walking piece of foliage, this can be great in the early-mid game for sneaking. That said, come the late game, a walking bush is an easy target.

Fortnite Battle Royale locations

fortnite battle royale map

Choosing where to land on the Fortnite Battle Royale map is another high risk/reward choice you need to make once you have launched yourself from the battle bus. We recommend beginners avoid the most built up, named areas - these are the places most people will go. If you can land and establish yourself in the game without being blown to bits straight away, that is a big first step. Also, if your Fortnite Battle Royale location is as central as possible, it minimises the chances of you having to rush across huge distances to the safe zone when the end of the match nears.

That said, many players start in more established areas because loot is more concentrated there. If you can escape the opening skirmishes in Fortnite Battle Royale locations like Pleasant Park and Retail Row, you will be armed to the teeth. Below you will find a primer on each main Fortnite Battle Royale location:

Anarchy Acres

fortnite battle royale map

  • Loot density: medium
  • Popularity: medium

Located to the north of the Fortnite Battle Royale map, Anarchy Acres is a collection of big barns with multiple floors to loot. Beware of the open fields, though, as you will be easy to spot and pick off.

Fatal Fields

  • Loot density: high
  • Popularity: high

To the south we have the ominously named Fatal Fields. This area also has big barns and lots to loot, but we recommend landing in the nearby hilly area to give yourself a good view of other players.

Flush Factory

  • Loot density: low-medium
  • Popularity: low

Also to the south, Flush Factory is a challenging Fortnite Battle Royale location in which to land, given its relative lack of loot and distance from the centre.

Greasy Grove

fortnite battle royale map

  • Loot density: very high
  • Popularity: very high

With a fast food restaurant and a gas station giving this south-western area its name, this residential part of the Fortnite Battle Royale map is full of houses with good loot. It can get crowded, though.

Lonely Lodge

  • Loot density: high
  • Popularity: low

The Lonely Lodge is a forested eastern area with huts, a trailer camp, and a watchtower with views for miles around. There is a lot of good loot here and it is relatively quiet: most players opt for the nearby Retail Row, instead.

Moisty Mire

  • Loot density: very high
  • Popularity: very high

Tucked away in the south-east corner of the map near the prison area, Moisty Mire is a swamp with a smattering of wooden cabins. Watch out for good loot in hollowed trees, but be careful of the bog that you need to cross to get to them. It will slow you down, making you a sitting duck for snipers. Chopping down trees here often gives you 100+ wood, allowing you to build walkways through the swamp.

Pleasant Park

fortnite battle royale map

  • Loot density: very high
  • Popularity: very high

Pleasant Park, a Fortnite Battle Royale location located to the north-west of the map, consists of many small buildings with plenty of looting opportunities. Land on a roof and use your pickaxe to smash your way in. It is much quicker to get the jump on loot this way - and only chumps use doors, anyway.

Retail Row

  • Loot density: very high
  • Popularity: very high

Just to the west of Lonely Lodge, Retail Row is a very popular landing spot - and not just for the great selection of shops. There are loads of buildings to loot here, but prioritise getting a decent shotgun lickety-split - it will come in handy in this close-quarters zone.

Wailing Woods

  • Loot density: low
  • Popularity: low

This sizeable forest close to Lonely Lodge in the north-east area has a clearing in the centre that can function as a great place to hunker down and defend if it remains within the eye of the storm. Loot is quite scarce compared to the other main areas but there are plenty of spots to hide.

Dusty Depot

fortnite battle royale tips dusty depot

  • Loot density: low
  • Popularity: medium

At the map’s centre is Dusty Depot, a location that is far more popular than it deserves to be. The three large warehouses here can spawn just one chest each, and that is if you are lucky. The area is great for early game action, but low loot density and zero ammo crates mean you can often find yourself walking out of this area with your tail between your legs and your hands empty.

Salty Springs

  • Loot density: high
  • Popularity: very high

A busy intersection of the map, Salty Springs sits in the southern half of the map and holds a generous amount of weapon and chest spawns, although you normally have to fight tooth and nail to keep any of it due to the high player count.

Tomato Town

  • Loot density: medium
  • Popularity: low

Tomato Town is a smaller Greasy Grove, and so you would be forgiven for thinking there is not much to it. Visiting the nearby bridge and bashing down a certain wall in the underground tunnel, however, can prove very rewarding for the more curious player.

Loot Lake

  • Loot density: high
  • Popularity: medium

If you fancy a challenge in Fortnite Battle Royale, land your glider at Loot Lake. There is loot, yes, but there is also a huge body of water which makes it perilous to access.
