Heroes of the Storm Review

Why would you pick Heroes of the Storm over League of Legends or Dota 2?

It's way, way easier to learn, and games play out at a far quicker pace. Thanks to the shared XP system there's no need to learn how to last hit. Thanks to the lack of items, you won't need to learn how to buy the right items. You'll just be learning map strategy, teamwork and character builds from the off.

Necessarily, that means HotS is a shallower game. But it's a more instantaneously exciting one.

Mainly the speed. Individual games are much shorter and more action-focused - you can play two or three games in an hour, and even short sessions feel more fulfilling than other MOBAs.

It's much easier for new players to start playing the game and improving in a meaningful way.

Also if you don't like the last hit and item systems (my case) you'll find the talents and shared xp really smooth.

Laning phase lasts less than 2 minutes until the first objective spawns and you can start team fighting. When the objective ends, people resume to their lanes until lvl10

Not exactly until lvl 10, but until the next objective phase, keeping that cycle until lvl10. Also several different maps, each having a unique objective

Which characters would you recommend to starting players?

I'd probably just pick something you think is cool. You're going to be a little confused for your opening games anyway (play against bots). That said, characters like Arthas, Jaina or Malfurion are simple enough to show you the ropes quickly.

I cut my teeth playing Tyrande and Uther. Stitches is a laugh, too.

Raynor, Muradin and Jaina to pick up different kind of mechanics.

Raynor for damage, Lili for support, Muradin for tank, Azmodan for specialist.

How steep is the learning curve in Heroes of the Storm?

It's a brick-wall, but a much smaller one than its friends. In the long-term, the shorter games mean decision points can matter more, but there's reliance on teamwork not always present elsewhere.

How fair is the free-to-play model in Heroes of the Storm?

Again, it's the worst part of the game. It desperately needs a Smite-style buy-the-game tier, or other business model overhaul. All the heroes should definitely be cheaper.

With 2.0 now it's a great model, making it easy to get good amount of heroes and cosmetics just for playing

Is Heroes of the Storm pay to win?

It's not, but variety is the name of the game in a MOBA, and you have to pay for it here. Certainly the game's weakest element.

Bought many many heroes and skins. Very happy with everything. Worth

How imaginative is the Heroes of the Storm lore?

It's bananas, frankly. The justification for the MOBA is that somewhere in the universe is a special Nexus where all the Blizzard characters get together to fight, die, and infinitely respawn. It makes no sense and is, coincidentally, brilliant.

It's fun, but it's certainly not something to spend a lot of time focusing on. If you like Blizzard's sense of humour you'll get a lot of joy out of it, and the team fight intro is one of their best-ever cinematics, but if you don't it's easy to ignore.

It consists of an awkward throat clearing and an admonition to not pay it much attention.

How active is the PvP community in Heroes of the Storm?

You'll get a game very quickly. Quick Matches are of varying quality - Blizzard are working on the matchmaking algorithm at the time of writing.

It's worth pointing out, too, that Heroes has a relatively welcoming community compared to similar games.

It's rare to not find a game quickly, at least when starting out. It doesn't have the playerbase of other games, but it's active enough.

How active is the competitive scene in Heroes of the Storm?

Very. HGC 2017 is an entirely different beast to the way eSports has operated in the past for the game. It's regular broadcasts with also-regular all-star tournaments, keeping the regions split so the world championships stay interesting. The Koreans are dominant, as you might expect.

How good are the graphics in Heroes of the Storm?

Much much better than DOTA and LoL. Not sure about Smite

It does what it needs to, and runs on a potato, as Blizzard games tend to. The art style lends itself well to not being the highest fidelity but still looking great a few years later.
