BioWare Montreal is now a support studio as Mass Effect is put on hold, say sources

According to sources close to the studio, BioWare Montreal is now a support studio, and we won’t be seeing any new Mass Effect games any time soon. If you’ve finished Mass Effect: Andromeda, you’ll know it’s clear that it was meant to serve as a starting point for a new story in the series. However, it looks like we won’t be seeing that vision come to pass, at least not for a while.

That’s one to scratch off our upcoming PC games list.

Rather than putting BioWare Montreal straight onto an Andromeda sequel, EA have positioned them to support EA Motive on Star Wars Battlefront 2, as well as helping the other BioWare studios on their upcoming games, say Kotaku’s four sources.

As for Mass Effect, BioWare Montreal are still working on updates. In fact, we posted about their latest just a few hours ago. Read about Mass Effect: Andromeda patch 1.06 at that link.

“Our teams at BioWare and across EA put in tremendous effort bringing Mass Effect Andromeda to players around the world,” said BioWare Montreal studio director Yanick Roy in a statement to Kotaku. “Even as BioWare continues to focus on the Mass Effect Andromeda community and live service, we are constantly looking at how we’re prepared for the next experiences we will create.

“The teams in EA Worldwide Studios are packed with talent, and more than ever, we are driving collaboration between studios on key projects. With our BioWare and Motive teams sharing studio space in Montreal, we have BioWare team members joining Motive projects that are underway. We’re also ramping up teams on other BioWare projects in development.

“There will be much more to come from BioWare in the years ahead.”

In a recent earnings call, EA CEO Andrew Wilson said the company’s faith in Mass Effect was still intact, and they had a vision for the future of the franchise. With this being Montreal’s first Mass Effect, perhaps another BioWare studio will lead the charge on a new Mass Effect in a few years, once their current projects wrap up.

It’s also worth noting that nobody has been laid off, they’ve just been reshuffled to help out on other projects.

The Montreal team have been lucky they weren't let go after the mess that is Andromeda. They should have been more tightly managed, the game direction has shoddy pacing, the world's are as devoid of meaning as the dialog is, multiplayer is a wreck, inventory management is worse than a teen's bedroom. If the teams in EA Worldwide Studios are packed with talent where were they when Andromeda was being made?

Don't blame the team for bad leadership from the top...

Odds are they were managed by people who leveraged their experience in traditional media (TV / Radio / Film) into leadership roles in video game development because media is media is media (it really is not).

There's no way anyone who plays games and who did actual production work on Andromeda was happy about forcing the product out when they did.

And 'talent' tends to be measured by products shipped, not the quality of those products. A person who shipped 5 pieces of poop in a year is technically 5 times more talented than a person who releases 1 piece of awesome in the same time frame according to the metric most executives follow.

They missed the whole spirit of ME and delivered something Ubisoft like.

I'm watching a play through of ME:A. The writing is putrid. That's not managment. That's lack of talent.

I did say they needed to be more tightly managed, there are aspects of Andromeda that show a lot of talent, as a total package it is discordant.

Bioware Montreal started out as a support studio for Edmonton, didn't they? Guess they weren't ready for the big leagues...

Well. This is fast. Even for EA. RIP Bioware.

The "main BioWare" is still working on another IP and were the ones responsible for previous DA and ME, this was a new group.

ME3 threw away the whole story from ME1 & ME2 for some retconned garbage with plot holes light-years wide followed by Red:Green:Blue.

DA:I was so tedious I couldn't finish it and just watched the laughable boss fight on YouTube.

DA2 was a shameless money grab.

SWTOR was terrible and I regret my early-access/pre-order to this day.

Now this.

Sorry, it's time to be honest. Bioware hasn't done anything worthwhile since ME2 and DA:O. And I don't expect it to get better.

What I expect is it to get worse. Like Maxis. Like Origin. Like every other thing EA has touched.

They should all be let go and other developers should be weary of them if they employ them.

I wouldn't feel comfortable letting them handle anything "huge" because they would let their personal bias bleed into the game and it's quality would suffer so it could cater to their beliefs.

For example: Bioware Montreal actively advocated for "unattractive female faces" because they believed it was marginalizing women gamers. They also don't believe (at the time of ME:A production) that the majority of their player base were young males.

Both of which are complete nonsense; and female AND male gamers should be appalled that Bioware Montreal would publicize this and still create a game with a lead female AND shooting.

This is the type of behavior the COD WW2 team is using: "They are making COD WW2 to prevent WW3." In their own words they believe that by creating WW2 COD they will stop WW3 from happening.

It is the biggest load of bull crap and gamers shouldn't support this type of behavior. It is the same thing as saying, "We are creating this porno so more of our player base (preteens - young adult) will be celibate."
