Update November 30, 2016: Hello Games have released another small patch following the Foundation Update, adding a bunch of tweaks and fixes to improve quality of life in the endless galaxy.

Dealing directly with their fans on Steam for the first time in a while, Hello Games revealed the details behind the patch, which addresses a bunch of bugs, crashes and incompatibilities, along with adding a mod detection icon and some other little bits.

Here are the full patch notes:

  • Following reports of some people experiencing issues with the game while unsupported mods are installed, we’ve added mod detection which will show a warning screen on loading when mods are detected. A click or button press will dismiss this screen.
  • Allowed remapping of the build menu and quick menu commands to support Azerty keyboards.
  • Fixed an issue which, in some rare cases, prevented NPCs from giving you mission critical dialogue.
  • Fixed a bug which could cause core items to be transferred from exosuit inventory to starship inventory. Note: this is a preventative fix and won’t fix the issue for those who have already experienced this bug. We have a cure for those who have experienced on the way, it’ll be released in our next patch.
  • Following player feedback, we have clarified messaging when being given tech that you already know.
  • Fixed a number of rare crashes (if you continue to experience crashes, please send a crash report and include your crash dumps).
  • Fix for monitor detection on PCs with 3rd party remote desktop or screen sharing applications
  • Running the game via the .exe file should no longer give Steam Init errors.

Update November 27, 2016: Hello Games have released the full patch notes for the Foundation Update over on the No Man's Sky official site. It includes details on base building, new play modes and a whole host of tweaks and bug fixes.

While base building is the bread and butter of this update, Hello Games have added creative mode which is for those looking to build a massive base without constraints, as well as survivial mode for those wanting to experience the true danger of the universe.

Farming is also coming to round out the base building, with players being able to grow a steady source of supplies. Along with building a base, this update also adds recruitable specialists who can fulfil specific jobs like tending to your crops or researching new weaponry while players are out mining.

Base building is not simply a planetside affair, as this update adds massive frieghters with expanded cargo holds which can be upgraded with new specialists. Frieghters can be left in certain systems to accrue resources while explorers check out uncharted systems.

Original Story November 25, 2016: Hello Games have gone very quiet since the release of No Man's Sky, no doubt in reaction to the overwhelming, loud, and, at times, very toxic debate surrounding the title, but they've finally spoken up in a new blog post to announce some changes coming to the space sim this week.

The Foundation Update will add the groundwork for base building, which is itself planned to arrive in a later update. Detailed patch notes for the Foundation Update are expected to be released soon, and we'll update when they are.

Hello Games say they've been working hard on patching the game all this time they've been quiet, going through testing and certification for the Foundation Update, which will signal the beginning of ongoing support, along with new features in the near future.

In the meanwhile, Hello Games also addressed some of the criticism aimed at the game since launch:

"The discussion around No Man’s Sky since release has been intense and dramatic," reads the update. "We have been quiet, but we are listening and focusing on improving the game that our team loves and feels so passionately about.

"Positive or negative feedback, you have been heard and that will truly help to make this a better game for everyone. This update will be the first small step in a longer journey. We hope you can join us."

It's good they are still working on this but total silence won't win them any fans as it just looks like abandonment.

I certainly hope additions are coming to the base game along side this base building mechanic, otherwise we're still in a barren desert with very little to do, but now we can make sand castles.

Trailer portrays a very strong step in the right direction, now it's a question of how many ex-fans will be willing to give 1.1 a go. I fear that people will look at this work with stubborn outlooks due to 1.0 reaching so few of its promises, but should this succeed in bringing back a player base, I can see No Man's Sky shaping into a great game, to the point I'm questioning picking it up cheap now XD
