Planetbase Review

How open is Planetbase to explore?

It is quite open. The problem is that there are invisible borders. i.e. what you see isn't necessarily where you can build.

What is there to explore? Then planets are all obviously randomly generated stretches of boring mountains that block your buildings and flatlands that let you expand your base.

I wish there weren't the invisible borders but you can explore freely within them.

Is it hard to build functional towns and cities in Planetbase?

Somewhat hard, since you can't direct your workers to go where you want them to go, so certain building or manufacturing processes can grind to a halt because of malingering space assholes.

Also, if your colonists are injured in any way, they can't work anymore and become simply dead weight unless you heal them. You might not always have time or medicine for that. I just want to work them to death, damn it.

How realistic is Planetbase?

All medicine is made from herbs, so not very much? Also, there's a stark contrast bewteen your Apollo 11 1/2 lander module and space fighter trader ships that land to sell you stuff.

Also, as I mentioned, your injured workers won't work even if it's a life or death situation.

Have you come up with any clever strategies in Planetbase?

Grow medicinal herbs to sell for fun and profit. Also, uninstall the game.

Enough to hang yourself. If memory serves, new buildings are unlocked when you have enough colonists or something. Other than that, build your base however you like, and do business by selling ores, inviting tourists to enjoy your recycled air and spartan quarters. I guess tourists learn to appreciate their lives once they see the hellhole your wretches live.

Does the setting of Planetbase feel original?

There's a setting? They just drop you down on a planet and leave you there. You have no attachment to any of your colonists because, specialties aside, they're just interchangeable bodies with name tags.

Not good? I don't remember any interesting sound bites in the game, and I don't recall colonists having barks or something.

Why do gamers stop playing Planetbase after a short period

Because it was boring, lame, entirely characterless. See Moon Tycoon, Startopia and Space Colony to see how to do a game like this right.
