I really miss playing Operation Flashpoint Games. this is going to be a nice replacement for that. Big world with military missions....what's not to like?
Fattox Avatar

Ditto. But ArmA 3 Apex is out in about 4 weeks time. Coop campaign and a new, huge map. Maybe that'd be your kind of thing? I know i'll be playing it in the meantime.

Battlefield 1 scrapped female soldiers because boys don’t believe in them, says ex-DICE coder Battlefield 1 scrapped female soldiers because boys don’t believe in them, says ex-DICE coder
Ben Barrett Avatar
We might have a new record here for people not reading the story. She makes it fairly clear that they weren't worried about historical accuracy originally here, guys. They wanted women in because it's cool. The rest of the game clearly isn't that bothered about history either - there weren't battle zeppelins hovering above every fight, believe it or not.
Fattox Avatar

I think people read the story, they just have a different opinion of what parts of realism they're willing to forgo. And what counts as "cool". Making assumptions like that because people don't agree with you is a cop-out.

DICE made their choice accordingly, rather than giving in to current 'trends'. It's not sexist to be against shoehorning. I'd say the opposite, in-fact.

Come on now, i know this is a PC gaming site, but i didn't know the PC stood for "political correctness".

You posted a link for "proof", which reads that the Russian battalion there had ~5000 females. The Russian army had about 12 million men. The actual representation wasn't equal by any measures, so why should the game portray it that way?

Is everyone really so afraid of sounding sexist that we'll just instead ignore reality, these days?Reply
Drozd Avatar

Absolute 100% realism was never the intention with Battlefield as pointed out in the article, so I am not sure why you're using it as an argument.

So how/where do i get this free access to Access, other than the one-time 14 day trial? Also, UFC doesn't seem to be in the list of Access games. The one game i actually fancied trying. ;(

Edit - This UFC issue might be some German censorship nonsense, actually...

Nostalrius say WoW execs 'want legacy servers' despite vanilla code difficultyNostalrius say WoW execs 'want legacy servers' despite vanilla code difficulty
RogDolos Avatar
There's a frustration here that Blizzard only gets one half of the equation: The game code and game states of the early vanilla era of WoW were not the only element: The server communities that existed then were a large part of the magic. Those sort of communities get recreated along with private servers, but they wouldn't exist within Blizzard's current social framework (Battle.Net et all, now with Facebook-- yeah).

They should stop worrying about how to fit the old vanilla code into their current systems and just license and sell the ability for the player-community to legally operate private servers. Let the fans take charge of "legacy" servers and regrow WoW's audience that way.
Fattox Avatar

How would Battle.net itself take away from the community feel? Or do you mean the cross-server side of things?

Back in vanilla, there were just the WoW forums and IRC for my original server. And the community thrived, imo, from the state of the game itself. The way you had to interact with people a lot more, instead of using the dungeon finder. How co-operation and manners were the primary method, so that someone would summon you to the dungeon entrance. PvP happened a lot more through people being forced to congregate in those areas too (especially on Raid nights), and the competitiveness between guilds and the two factions is what brought out a lot of the community 'spirit' and comradery.

More legs on the ground, due to the absence of flying mounts, also ensured you always ran in to someone in any zone with quite a nice frequency. Each encounter fuelling those fires a little bit more, either through a chance to group up with a new-found friend, or a PvP encounter with a foe.

In my opinion (and experience), anyway.

Fattox Avatar

I only have one complaint about Kerbal. It's the only game that makes me put off playing it quite often, because of the amount of content updates they give it. I call it "wait until next patch" syndrome. By the time the kinks of a new one are worked out, the next one seems right around the corner.

Edit - 6 days 16 hours. Well, obviously it's not as effective a deterrant as i thought...

Fattox Avatar
What i find funny is, some people got some of the same keys in their 6 cent bundle, as i did in a big bundle. Yet THAT bundle is listed as sold out now? How can it be sold out, when you're giving the same keys out in the bigger bundles???

Maybe it's simply bad luck, but it seems like a bait and switch (or Jam Auction) to me, give some good stuff with the 6p bundles to build hype, list those as sold out, so that plebs like me gamble on the bigger bundles.

For anyone unaware, here's a Jam Auction - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NkVFhZZXpyQ

I went all in with the 9.99€ pack and got some junk, hence the salt. Maybe someone else wants some of these, have at it:

Deadly Boss Mods, World of Warcraft's most useful addon, is now on PatreonDeadly Boss Mods, World of Warcraft's most useful addon, is now on Patreon
Fattox Avatar

Having played before DBM was even a thing, and also with DBM, i woudn't say you were exaggerating. It's become a standard thing for people to use (many guilds demand it), which makes most new mechanics that Blizzard try adding to bossfights pretty redundant, which is a shame, imo.

Reply
NathSB Avatar

It also becomes something of an arms race, where Blizzard has to add more and more complexity to boss mechanics, to the point where it's almost impossible to do without addons (on any harder difficulty.) Even if it's possible without, it's still mandatory if you want to participate in any semi-serious raiding guilds. It's a vicious circle, really.

They've added quite a lot of the warnings previously reserved for DBM to the default UI now.

I never understood why they didn't make it versus MP like Left4Dead. I think i would have played it a lot more if that type of game mode was in. I mean, the co-op campaign was a bit short, and i wasn't really interested in grinding for loot. It just seemed so obvious a thing to add (imo) that i actually expected it to show up in a patch shortly after release.

It's a good game for relaxing with a few buddies inbetween doing other stuff in the evening. Kind of like a casual phone-based game in that regard, except much more fleshed out.

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor review snippet
Not at all, aside from (as mentioned) the last boss fight being a huge disappointment. Such a build up, even right before the encounter, then a QTE that was even less challenging than all other QTE's in the game. It's as if they wanted to make it "cinematic" and pretty much let you win by making it easy, so as to not break immersion. But it didn't work out well imo.

Kerbal Space Program review snippet How does Kerbal Space Program run on your PC?
It doesn't seem to have a high demand for resources, until you start loading the mods up, after which the loading times will increase upon the launching the game. Aside from visual mods, the performance in-game seems to be unaffected (by most mods). My gaming rig is quite beastly (i7 4770k, 6GB 780, 16GB RAM), but i've played it on a standard no-frills laptop without any problems.
