The ricochet mechanic was definitely Steamworld Heist's best feature. The story was daft and the levels could get a bit repetitive, but nothing beats bouncing a bullet off four walls before knocking an enemy's hat from their head... even if you didn't mean it!

Agreed. I particularly like the achievement for wasting a move retrieving your hat after it'd been shot off.

Emotionally hooked! That's what I was getting at. Torment has lots of ways to get you personally invested in its plot, where lots of other RPGs are content to give you a vague end of the world story.

Yes, you can. It's also mentioned in the article. If you can't import a savegame, PoE2 would never know whether Eder is still alive or not in your game. ;)

Crash's deductions are correct. Sawyer has also mentioned that, should you have no save game to import, you'll be able to determine the state of the story in Pillars 2's introduction.

Nice report Jeremy. Was it just one mission you had the opportunity to play? Did you have a chance to play around with the new features on the strategy map? Do the changes Pavonis have made feel well balanced?

Thanks! I've played a few missions, with bits of strategy in between. I'd say the most profound change on the world map is your ability to manage rebel enclaves - assigning individuals the task of gathering intel, or resources, or new recruits. Over the long-term, I can only assume the strategy feels much more involved as a result - offering the map-level systemic depth I suspect Firaxis were a bit wary about embracing.


The new weapons and enemies and such certainly feel balanced - especially as a lot of them have been around in packs for a while now - but it's tough to know how the top-layer strategy is going to play out after 50 hours or whatever. There's certainly more than enough justification here to start a new campaign, though.

If you like heads to pop when you click them, you're going to be disappointed. This is a shooter in which you'll be thinking about DPS, not one-shot-kills, and on the harder modes especially you can expect to sink a whole clip into an enemy - even if you're sinking those bullets into their skull. There ARE rifles with sniper scopes, however. And lovely big propane tanks strapped to the backs of enemy Cleaners to aim for. Good fun, that.

Second-to-second (and over lots and lots of hours) I'd say I haven't really noticed any problems with performance. On a couple of occasions - ambushing a patrol or lobbing a grenade into a thick nest of enemies - I've seen the game struggle to display all the outcomes at once as it does all the maths. But that's all that springs to mind in terms of slowdown.

I see. I tried it and it doesn't seem to run very well on my system. I can't run at high 1440p 60fps I need to drop quite a lot of settings before I get a solid 60fps. 4670K @ 4.4GHz, GTX 970, 16GB of ram.

Oh my goodness, yes. Remember when the enemies were unknown? That feeling of unfamiliarity is back with a plasma-enabled vengeance. Some monstrosity will appear in your peripheral vision, indulge in a little introductory dance, and then a couple of turns later do something awful and unpredictable to your favourite grenadier. You can do all the research you like back at base, but until you've experienced all the horrors for yourself, there'll be nasty surprises galore.

For anybody who still remembers the stiffly undynamic, seemingly hacked-in reticule GTA III came to PC with, GTA V's shootouts feel like a godsend. The cover elements Rockstar introduced in GTA IV are refined here - competitive with (though not better than) similar systems in the dedicated shooters of contemporary gaming. The options for taking control of the fight are more comprehensive than ever before, too. Aim assist is a welcome help when you've eight things to think about while jogging away from a helicopter, but you can turn that off and enable first-person to turn GTA into a passable FPS.

2 benefits I can think of...

1. Lower matchmaking times. Quicker to get into games.

2. Less toxicity and flaming all around, as the PS4 players can only use the quickchat to PC players and vice versa

Kyrat is split into two, with its southern portion completely open for the first half of the game, and the northern region opened up thereafter. Beyond that, however, there's no stipulation that you play the story campaign at all - every inch of the map is free to visit (though the higher Himalayan mountains are, perhaps understandably, restricted to certain missions and not freely climbable). The addition of zippers, tiny helicopters held together by duct tape, helps fulfill that dream with ease.

Sometimes in The Crew you go through a tunnel, and the roar of the engine rolls around the road, up to the roof and back at you. Moments like that make you wonder whether more could have been done elsewhere in sound design to capture the primal thrill of muscle cars. But every other noise I've been privy to has been up to scratch, and the soundtrack is a pleasant mix of stomping indie rock, jabbing trance and ethereal orchestral oddness.

Even the littlest grey man with the lousiest shot can lay low your crack sniper on a bad day - so in that sense, they're all scary. They're scariest on your first playthrough, when the enemy truly are unknown - learned about only through experience or autopsy. The chryssalid in particular will leave you traumatised the first time its snaps one of your favourite soldiers.

Fairly bleak. Some post-apocalyptic scenarios default to a familiar version of zombie-dom we've long been desensitised to, Left 4 Dead presents a world in which normality is all too recent. Though the cities have emptied out after waves of evacuations, humanity feels close enough to touch. Of particular note are the messages scrawled, crossed-out and rescrawled on the walls of safehouses - missives from loved ones who never found each other, or nihilistic bickerings about the precise nature of the end of the world. That's a hangover from Left 4 Dead 1: new is the cultural influence of New Orleans and its environs, which seeps from the swamps to the streets and into the soundtrack. There's a kind of warmth there. But in general, Left 4 Dead 2's connection with humanity leaves it extra-bleak.

Very, very detailed. The Astronauts have made use of a scanning technique which has allowed them to include in Ethan Carter some of the most photorealistic tree stumps ever committed to code. Reinforce your F12 key - next to Sir, You Are Being Hunted, this is easily the year's screenshottiest game. The devs haven't neglected the broad sweep, though - Red Creek Valley is a place of breathtaking scope, and a surprising number of the views you'll first think of as pretty vistas turn out to be explorable areas of the game.
