The way I see it, we adults have a responsibility to discipline kids when they engage in unacceptable behavior, and we also have a responsibility to keep children safe.
There is an issue with a general culture online that embraces offensive speech that serves no purpose other than to antagonize, degrade, and intentionally harm others emotionally, speech that, when used in the professional world, would get someone kicked out of a public space, could get someone fired, and could permanently ruin someone's career. When people are intentionally harmed by this speech, there is a strong, vocal part of community that blames the victim, demanding that they grow thicker skin rather than criticize hate speech that is unacceptable in every other aspect of society.
Adults are not supposed to ignore children when they get too rowdy. Adults have an obligation to set proper expectations and to provide safe spaces.
