Wow. I thought I got a raw deal having to settle for a 1080ti FE when I only had a few weeks left in the Step-up program and immediately afterward the 1080ti FTW cards came out ( though not available through the Step-Up at the time. )Reply

Same thing happened to me, stepped up from my 1070 FTW to a 1080 Ti FE because my window was over before the FTW3 came out.

Especially after AMD made sure and rejiggered their cards to be even more efficient for mining.

They already did that. Hearthstone, the whole war aspect (which was so incredibly shallow), dragons for the sake of dragons (even though they were actually wyverns), and so on. Skyrim started all this, it's just that it was more acceptable because it was this big... I don't know, it was a mess of machismo, chauvinistic-laden fantasy horse manure that its audience found much more acceptable.

The only reason that it became much more obvious with this game is that it didn't have the same trappings. It wasn't dressed up as a Man's Man's game, with more alpha male idiocy than I could ever stomach on even my best day. It just goes to show that bad fantasies sell more than cohesive storylines.

And Skyrim certainly was focused around the alpha male. I mean, really. Who can forget the marketing focused around the Ever Manly, Drunk, Violent, and Shouty Dragonborn? I hated seeing that everywhere.

This is why The Elder Scrolls Online is my Skyrim, it's pretty much the Elder Scrolls game I always wanted. It follows some pretty fantastic plot lines and you can make choices that really change the world. It's really not seen as much though if you play the Daggerfall Covenant, which seems to be the most popular amongst fantasy fans because it's mind-bogglingly dull and it's the only part of ESO that really pushes the alpha male stuff (but maybe both of those reasons are why??).

So if you've played it but only the Covenant, go back and give it another go with one of the other factions. Especially the Aldmeri Dominion, which is incredibly strong in the writing department.

The thing is though is that people gravitate to boring, dull, grey, unromantic, dull, unimaginative, soulless, familiar, commonplace, often alpha bullshit. The average gamer always picks a human, which means they don't have a mind creative enough to walk a mile in another species' shoes. I put it down to a lack of intelligence resulting in xenophobia, but that implies that I'm actually quite a bit above average intelligence. I don't like that. I don't feel particularly smart. If I'm not, though, then that means that large numbers of the rest of the species are exceptionally stupid. I don't know how to reconcile this.

And if these people keep choosing grey games, with regressive ideas, waifus, alpha bullshit, and excessive familiarity? Why can we even think we deserve better?

It's like the popularity of Overwatch. It's soulless. It has no character to speak of, and its own lore is contrary to the game it's supposed to be a part of. The levels don't feel like actual places, so much as just a stage set for battles. The characters are purely one-dimensional archetypes and most of them are meant to be submissive 'waifus' for a straight, male audience. It even has a healslut, which is damned disappointing.

Contrary to that? You have something like Battleborn, which has strong women, fantastic dialogue, oodles of personality, brilliantly diverse and fleshed out characters, and it's just so often so clever. Few other games would be as ballsy as to do a piss-take of the Simulated Reality theory, but Battleborn did. A topic like that would go waaaay over the heads of most people.

And often, games are designed for dribblingly idiotic mendicants who use the Internet to scream and shout for ever more unintelligent games for themselves, at the expense of everyone who might even only be marginally smarter than them. But smart enough to not find the tripe that's so commonplace these days appealing.

Like I said in the other post here. The problem is never technology, it's how human culture has regressive backward leaps and caters to its biggest idiots.

So, really, as much as it bothers me we really only have our own species to blame. And this does so much to fuel my misanthropy you wouldn't believe. I'm not particularly fond of being human any more! Too many regressive, uninspired idiots clamouring for familiarity and xenophobia for my tastes.

And believe me, living in the UK... With the EU referendum of late I've had nothing but xenophobia crammed down my throat.

What a wonderful time to be alive.

The important thing is that you get to feel self-righteous enough to boast of your vast intellect. I, for one, was waiting with bated breath to find out if it was true.

The author must have been standing behind me as I played, listening to me bitch about things. I admit that I am just not able to play as a bad guy, but even then I would have liked to have some input beyond being nice, and being nice while sarcastic.

I am an old, spazzy, retiree, so not even in the same demographic universe as the gamers Beth. should be going after, so I get it that I am a tiny minority that isn't very interested in settlement-building. Nice to see someone else who mentions it, however.Reply

You're far from the only one. They took a franchise known for you being a lone wanderer and instead made you go round and build houses for people... Talk about missing the mark.

Fallout: New Vegas review snippet Would you buy at full price or wait for a Fallout: New Vegas sale?
I have already purchased the GOTY edition three times, though never at full-price. I would have at the time, but I was still having trouble running Oblivion on my rig, never mind FO3/NV. Now, I'm running The Witcher: Wild Hunt with ultra graphics @ 1440p. heh

I'm horrible at shooters, likely why I have never gone for PvP type games, but I love how it works in FO4. Of course, I had to cheat a bit, because lame-O, but I like how many ways I have died due to dumbassery, rather than because the enemies never miss or some other silliness.

Topic of the Week: Does it matter to you if you don't finish a big RPG?Topic of the Week: Does it matter to you if you don't finish a big RPG?
tom.trog69 Avatar
Fallout 3 is the only modern RPG I've ever finished. NV bores me after OWB/LR, I played so much side stuff in Skyrim that I had to go elsewhere for long stints and am still on my first character, and The Witcher: Wild Hunt; that's the strangest of all.

See, I upgraded my 780 to a 980ti just so I could play WH with Ultra settings @ 1440p. Then, when I started the game, my mobo started giving me issues, so I went ahead and had this z170 system built with the 980ti included.

But, as I finished the tutorial beginning, I found that the key-mapping is a nightmare for me. So many important keys and....it just made me drop interest and move on to FO4. So here I am, with WH only started, 1100 hours into FO4, including Far Harbor mostly done, and I still haven't chosen a side, at level 94. I am likely the weirdest RPG gamer in existence.
