RPGs deserve better side questsRPGs deserve better side quests

I really enjoyed this piece, thanks. The main issue I have is that quests so rarely level with the player. When you start DA:I you aren't the Inquisitor, you are trying to build up trust by performing small gestures like herding druffalo and collecting herbs. But by the end of the game you are now a demi-god, worshipped by your followers... Yet the new areas you unlock are still full of quests like 'Collect 5 spindle weed'. It no longer makes sense, there's dissonance between the plot and the actions you are being asked to perform.

If companies still feel like padding out their games with infinite quests, there are still solutions. One would be an escalation of quest complexity and difficulty, keeping the more complex plots until later in the game. Another would be for some quests to become unavailable after your character reaches a certain level.Reply

Yeah, it's particularly bizarre in games that make you the most important person in the world. You've got the fate of entire nations in your hands, but you're collecting some herbs in a field.

The thing is, there's a way to make that work, and BioWare's done it before. In Mass Effect, you flit around the galaxy finding resources, but you're an explorer and those resources are massively important for the war effort. Scanning planets isn't much fun, but there's at least some logic behind it. In Inquisition, it's just busy work for the sake of it.

Pah, and to think Valve thought The International was what it took to walk tall.

I haven't bought Witcher 3 yet, and I can honestly say that post-release DLC (free or not) isn't going to make a difference.

I don't really believe in computer RPGs. Games like Mass Effect, Dragon Age and the Witcher do not allow you to 'play a role', they allow you to make some cosmetic choices, or class choices, and then present you with a series of decisions based on pre-determined scripted storyline events - often with clearly signposted 'correct' solutions. Most RPGs, I feel, actually belong to different genres. The three I've listed, I believe, are really action-adventure games. Unlike other action-adventure games (Zelda, Tomb Raider, Ecstatica 2 - best game ever?) they lack genre features I find compelling like satsifying combat and puzzle solving. Instead they focus on loot collecting, branching storylines and interacting with dialogue. I don't begrudge those who like these features. I do not.

So there, a cynical ramble with a simple tl;dr: availability of DLC has nowt to do with whether I'd like a game or not : )

Why not just ask for a refund?
