Xbox didn't prompt Sony to make PS4 Pro - they were worried about players migrating to PC

PS4 Pro

The world of consoles is a bit of a weird one at the moment, what with both Microsoft and Sony making mid-generation hardware improvements, perhaps admitting their first batch of consoles just wasn't up to the task. Microsoft were first to fire, unveiling the Xbox One S and promising a mega powerful console in the form of Xbox Scorpio later on. But at the PlayStation Meeting this week, Sony fired back, revealing their upgraded console, the PS4 Pro, out this year.

Blah, blah, consoles, Sony, Microsoft - shut up. Here's our list of the best PC games.

Sony say their console, which is capable of upscaled 4K, wasn't a reaction to the new Xbox, however - it was a reaction to us, PC gamers. Specifically PC gamers like me, who left mid generation for something capable of a bit more.

“I saw some data that really influenced me,” Sony Interactive Entertainment chief Andrew House told the Guardian. “It suggested that there’s a dip mid-console life cycle where the players who want the very best graphical experience will start to migrate to PC, because that’s obviously where it’s to be had.

"We wanted to keep those people within our ecosystem by giving them the very best and very highest [performance quality]. So the net result of those thoughts was PlayStation 4 Pro - and, by and large, a graphical approach to game improvement.”

It's a noble goal, if true, but people don't only come to PC for graphics, they come for flexibility, cheaper games and more choice. Obviously graphical oomph plays a large part, but it would be wise not to forget the rest. Bethesda announced earlier that Sony had vetoed Fallout 4 and Skyrim mods on console, so I'd wager the console company still doesn't quite get that just yet.

Then there's upgrading. I mean, sure, a new rig will cost you more than the $399 price point of the PS4 Pro, but it can do a lot more and, when you want to upgrade, you just buy the specific parts you need. I don't think the new console is going to stop people coming over to PC any time soon.

Mass Effect: Andromeda did look lovely when shown at the PlayStation event this week, though. Still, I bet it looks better on a GTX 1080. Phwoar.

Ha, then what the heck prompted them to jack up the annual price of PS Plus from $49 to $59? Aside from greed, I mean. 'Cause that's definitely not competitive with the $0/year price of multiplayer on PC. :v

In Europe you can still plug in an internet cable into your PS and play. PS plus is not required.

Too late for me, I switched to PC after trying to play Skyrim on the hopelessly obsolete PS3. They've got some good exclusives but as of right now, not enough to buy a PS4 for.

If they wanted to compete with PC they would allow mods on Skyrim and Fallout 4?

Dickheads!

So they made a weaker PC with none of the benefits of a PC to stop gamers moving to PC?

Ok sounds legit.

It's what they've always done ...

You buy consoles for exclusives. Anything else, a PC does better.

It's a reaction to two things, 4k and VR. Both of which the PC could do just fine, but the current gen consoles struggled with. With VR being such a hype train, they had to react, otherwise people would have moved to PC.

It is rather strange as PC Gaming sites such PCGamesN lend themselves a generate free advertising or 'paid idk' for companies like Sony.

Sony who have never done anything for PC Gaming. Unless of course, pay to Developers do not release a game on PC. Or pay for Developer to fuck with versions of games for PC!

How is this advertising? The post is mostly about why Sony can't compete with PC with the Pro. Pretty bad advertising, if you ask me.

Well we were covering the event because there were cross platform releases, such as a little game called Mass Effect Andromeda. Or should we just not cover that because it's at a console game show? Games first, platforms second. We didn't cover anything that was console exclusive and what we do here is not advertising.

Sony don't do anything, its all about money to keep PS4 alive, the crash of console market is imminent they know it, so they are made crazy with ascension of PC Gaming!

If you prefer paid a Sony to play old titles, where the money spent by you will be reversed to supply content on PS4 instead, repeat instead of encouraging faithful developers to support the PC Gaming with really interesting content such as Paradox, CD Projekt Red, Amplitude Studios do, go ahead, one of the PC's basic characteristics is its freedom.

Well I did buy The Witcher 3 twice and have 105 hours in Cities: Skylines.

Major companies such as Microsoft, Sony and publishers like EA, Ubisoft. All they care about is money, it's always been like this.
