QUAKE Review

How gory is QUAKE?

Looking at it through 2016's eyes, the gore is abstract and minimal. It was decidedly adult stuff on release though - the extra fidelity that came with its 3D polygonal character models brought an extra level of shock when you saw an enemy get gibbed.

Settle down. Monster design is great. Not id's most iconic, but imaginative and monstrous in the extreme.

It's about more than monster design though. Quake has an aesthetic than runs through from the ambient sounds and soundtrack (thanks, Trent Reznor) to its satanic iconography, level names, colour palettes and narrative, such as the latter is. The result is a thick, palpable atmosphere of dread. Doom tried the same, but it's primary colours did for that over time. Quake still feels like a trip to hell.

Why does QUAKE feel retro?

Because it was released in 1996. It can legally buy alcohol in the UK now.
