Sheltered Review

Have you come up with any clever strategies in Sheltered?

The blend of random and predictable outcomes means that there's broadly only one way to progress through the days. You need plenty of water butts to make the most out of rainfall and traps to catch animals on the surface - a steady supply of water and food is practically all you need.

What kind of decisions does Sheltered ask you to make?

At first it seems like there are too many decisions to make, when you know the mechanics and get settled there are actually very few. When times are tough there's plenty of life and death calls to make, but it's not too difficult to keep the shelter comfortably ticking over.

Does Sheltered make you feel powerful?

You're charged with keeping a family alive in the end of days. You can let them die, place them in peril, stop them from eating, drinking or cleaning. There is a sense of power and control, but it's purely mechanical.

How well does Sheltered let you develop your character?

Basic stats levelling is about as much character development as you can expect. If there are narratives to place on your characters then they are entirely your own to make, but there's little to fuel them.

How realistic is Sheltered?

As management games go, fairly. To make something basic there are plenty of resources to collect, making each item you build fairly precious, which is very realistic given the setting. That said, my family can only seem to go a day or two without showering before getting ill - personally I've managed not to for far longer than that.

Why does Sheltered feel retro?

The pixel art and basic combat encounters are reminiscent of old arcade games.

How bleak is the end of the world in Sheltered?

About as bleak as you'd expect it to be. There's all the usual: cannibalism, abandonment, murder, hopelessness etc.

All the post-apocalyptic miseries are there, but when you don't care for the characters it's all just scenery.
