Star Citizen's developers say $45,000 refund is a hoax

Crowdfunding is a precarious business, especially in game development, where projects get delayed or veer off in new directions all the time. Rightly or wrongly, quite a few Star Citizen backers feel as though they haven’t had value for money, and one of them just claimed they’ve been given a $45,000 refund. It may not be true, however: developers Cloud Imperium Games (CIG) have denied the whole thing.

Tame the final frontier in the best space games on PC.

The claim was made only yesterday, on a subreddit devoted to obtaining refunds from Star Citizen (because, apparently, that topic is worth its own forum). The original poster - who has since deleted their account - claimed that they represented a "commercial organisation" who had "sidelined many other great games and commercial opportunities waiting for Star Citizen," but felt they couldn't continue to do so.

They claim that, after five weeks of hassle from CIG supposedly "in the hope you’ll forget or give up," the devs refunded the cost of three completionist’s packages, each priced at $15,000 (they’ve since risen to $18,000). In two further edits to the story, the OP adds screenshots as proof after a request from the moderators, and then two videos.

This ship is called the Reclaimer.

PC Gamer followed up with CIG, who initially dismissed the whole thing as "totally fabricated" and "wrong on so many levels." When asked about the screens, CIG said a refund was recently issued to a customer, but for $330, rather than $45,000. Asked if this was the same customer, who might have edited the correspondence to make the amount appear bigger, CIG said "yes to the first. Yes to the second… as best as we can tell."

Videos would be harder to fake, but one has been taken down. The other is here, and supposedly shows the OP refreshing the relevant correspondence with CIG. We’ll leave it to you to judge whether this is as conclusive as they seem to think. Note that their name has been masked by a black bar, so at least a minor level of tampering has occurred.

Just to put this $45,000 in perspective, Star Citizen has raised over $159 million in funding so far and has raked in at least $2 million a month since April this year. It's hard to imagine CIG fretting over this figure.

It's not especially hard to fake a video for anyone with a little computer knowledge. Save a copy of the site, edit the code to display a different total, host said copy on your own PC, and then modify your host file to point that URL back on your own machine.

Any refresh would reload the modified version of the website saved and hosted on your PC.

This subreddit "refund"section is out of any control like Escapist was by providing "proof" of ex-employees ID that was proven fake. Even better This the nest of all guys rushing every SC article to shoot refund. Astormapproachs is one of this subreddit active mods.. who "approved" himself the evidence (jpges and video included) as "valid"... just to say that everything they can do to hurt SC Comunnity will be done...

There is already proven fake Jpge of $16.000 (few weeks ago). OP on Reddit call moron people saying it is fake and provide a few seconds video refreshing a screen on what his supposed to be a 45K refund...

This can be faked with some relatively medium video podcast skill and video editing tools. He could have also simulated the White House garden with alien walking on the grass.

Trolls are desperate for visibility with major patch upcoming in October.

Note: This refund has been confirmed fake by CIG and OP who did delivered the information cancelled his account on SubReddit section... :) Lies and obfuscation as usual.

It has been claimed that Joe Blober is the person behind this fake refund. Cannot say it would not surprise me if that was true.

... nice one troll... except CIG do have the identity of the guy who did try to create another "drama" :)

At least if your conspiracy of fake refund did not worked as expected (and it had zero chance to work), try to stand like a man and assume your trollish behavior :)

I'm not trolling. I am just repeating something I heard in more than 1 place.

I'm not in with the goons or anyone who may have had anything to do with the fake refund so none of that is anything to do with me.

P.S your anti-ds blog desparately needs new content

Midimaker, this small group of trolls is changing alts names not their evil/toxic activities, so my blog does not require any update.

You say to have anyting to do with those fake stories exactly like DS said to have nothing to do with thousands of lies/obfuscation/doxing against SC Community. or CIG team.

The fact you did tried to connect me to this parody put you right in this haters fiction.

Swallow it man (and yours buddies). I am here to stay as stated in my blog... this all orchestrated drama is very entertaining... You bring in the wrong guy man. Never beat or bring a masochist in a battle ring... that is a very wrong move :)

Give me more! So long midimaker.
