Will The Beginner's Guide be keeping you up at night?

Without discussing spoilers, there's an implied horror atmosphere throughout, which is better at getting under your skin the less you know. It'd be a push to say it's a scary game, though.

How surreal is The Beginner's Guide?

There are several layers of reality to navigate, and some architecture that M. C. Escher would be proud of. Looking back on it is like remembering a dream. It's pretty surreal, yep.

How good is the The Beginner's Guide story?

This is the big one - the game lives and dies on its narrative. It can also be spoiled very easily by discussing that narrative too much, so I'll just say this - I like the concept a lot, and enjoyed the majority of the plot arc, but didn't find the conclusion particularly interesting. It borders on indulgent, I think. That said, the story is a journey worth embarking on.

How good are the sounds in The Beginner's Guide?

It's a source engine game with fairly low production values - audiovisual immersion isn't really the objective. I heard a lot of familiar audio samples from the Source 2 library, but that didn't detract from the experience. It's also worth mentioning that sound is used in quite a novel way here, in the form of a quasi-director's commentary. It's an interesting approach to storytelling.

Again, Source 2. Looks as you'd expect. Still manages to surprise and create unsettling atmosphere with that old tech, though.
