The Crew Review

Do vehicles in The Crew handle realistically?

No, but they've found a pretty good balance between realism and arcade handling. Most cars also handle noticeably different, which is nice.

Most importantly, I always have fun when driving in the Crew.

How well does The Crew let you develop your character?

It doesn't. It does let you develop your chars and tailor them to a certain extent, but that requires a lot of time put into its RNG-heavy reward system.

Speaking of characters, though, the washed-up hipster they call the protagonist (I forget his name) is downright awful in every way.

How good are the graphics in The Crew?

The Crew was in development for a good half-decade. A couple of things happened in that time that have done Ivory Tower's game harm: firstly, the entire open-world driving genre was invented and honed. And secondly, game engines got a lot more capable. Looked at from a purely technical perspective, The Crew's environments are stripped back and slightly bare-bones.

Many of its sights and landmarks are genuinely beautiful despite that, however - its map is meticulously constructed and unlike anything ever attempted before in open world games. That sort of ambition should be rewarded with a gasp or two as you come out of the desert in Vegas or from the forests into New York.

How good are the sounds in The Crew?

Sometimes in The Crew you go through a tunnel, and the roar of the engine rolls around the road, up to the roof and back at you. Moments like that make you wonder whether more could have been done elsewhere in sound design to capture the primal thrill of muscle cars. But every other noise I've been privy to has been up to scratch, and the soundtrack is a pleasant mix of stomping indie rock, jabbing trance and ethereal orchestral oddness.

How does The Crew run on your PC?

No matter how quickly I belt it down the freeways in a custom drag Dodge, The Crew keeps pace. It's to be commended for that. The only troubles I've had are server-side - the odd log-in failure and a curious dearth of players, even when there should have been plenty available at launch.
