Topic of the Week: What game series do you want to see brought back from the dead?

topic of the week hostile waters reboot sequel remake

This week Square Enix has put out a call for developers to pitch games set in the Anachronox, Gex, or Fear Effect universes and last week Atari revealed they’re rebooting Asteroids as a survival game set on the moon. It seems every publisher’s looking through their back catalogue for a game series to reboot.

Question is, what series do you want to see brought back from the dead?

I’ll start things off.

Hostile Waters is one of my favourite games of all time. Released back in 2001, it was a wonderful blend of real-time strategy and third-person combat. You commanded a futuristic aircraft carrier which could build tanks, aircraft, harvesters, anything you needed in the fight against the cabal of war criminals threatening Earth.

You could direct all your units on the battlefield from a top-down commander’s view and with a double-click of the mouse you could hop into any of your pilots’ brain and take control of the vehicle. One moment you’d be constructing a new tank on the carrier, choosing its weapon loadout and what special equipment to install, and the next you’d be driving that tank into the enemy base.

On top of that, it had a story written by Warren Ellis, Tom Baker (off of that Doctor Who) voiced the narrator, and had some ace menu music.

Unfortunately, Hostile Waters’ developer, Rage Software, sank into bankruptcy in 2003 and all hope of a sequel went with it. Bohemia Interactive remade Carrier Command, the series Hostile Waters was based on, but the new Carrier Command was just awful. I’d love to see another developer try and continue the Hostile Waters series on modern machines. And, this time, for the love of God, include multiplayer.

So, over to you: what series would you like rebooted and why?

Micro Machines. Online play would be so lovely.

Command & Conquer. Needs a hard reset. Got ridiculous.

Shenmue. They really needed to finish this.

Warcraft RTS. Would be fantastic as HD reskin.

X-wing vs Tie Fighter. Perfect time for a space RPG/Arcade shooter.

Police Quest. I wont rest until a decent cop game exists.

Would love to see Warcraft return to its RTS roots.

I have a lot of doubts about a decent cop game being possible - how do you gamify monotony?

Warcraft 3 is being remade in SC2. Blizzard added all the assets & a team is working on it. Check Youtube.

The same way The Wire did. Turn that side of the job into the problem with the job.

Freedom Force! It is arguably the best comicbook-inspired game series of all time. Irrational Games tried to self-publish the second game in the series, but this was unfortunately before digital distribution had really taken off, so they published it the old fashioned way, and the effort nearly bankrupted them, at which point they were bought by 2K and have made nothing but Bioshock games ever since. Which really sucks, because the second game ended on an intriguing cliffhanger, and I've been dying to know what happens next!

Evil Genius. Such a great concept, I'm amazed it hasn't been revived up to this point. Same for Startopia.

A sequel to Master of Orion 2. Because as we all know, MOO3 NEVER HAPPENED.

No One Lives Forever. Set today. Kate Archer's Daughter (Granddaughter?) is the main character, and Kate provides mentorship and training.

Sword of the Samurai. With the success of CK2 and Shogun 2, I think this would be a huge hit.

I started playing Evil Genius again recently and it truly is a wonderful concept. I'd love to see someone make a sequel!

I'd love to see another Mech Commander. I loved the small scale tactical battles without the resource management. Ground Control would do as well.

I'm a big Mechwarrior fan but I think Mech Commander beat out most the series. Designing a lance of mechs and ordering them around the battlefield in a way that supported each of their strengths was thoroughly engrossing

Empire of Earth.

Can you imagine it with scales of Wargame or even just BFME? It would be great.

You mean apart from Half-Life? Which to all intents and purposes has been Left4Dead...

Hmm. This is hard, my Top 5 games of all time are X-Com, Deus Ex, Starcraft, Hitman Blood Money, and Dragon Age Origins. None of them are exactly wanting for sequels (except for Blood Money, ahahahaha! *sob*) Even if you don't like Firaxis' XCOM, the old style X-Com is served with other games of a similar kind.

How many years is enough? Would Left 4 Dead 3 count? (Or, y'know, Half Life 3).

Okay, how about Freelancer? A sandbox, arcade, space-sim(ish). A story that framed lots of flying around trying to get better kinds of spaceship. Lovely.

A new Startopia would be awesome. There aren't really many other games like it. There are plenty of management games but they're not quite the same.

Ground Control, one of the best RTS back then.

Freespace!

Quake! (A game set in either the Strogg or the Shambler universe would be fine me. And No, Quake 4 doesn't count.)

Sacrifice!

Ground Control. (Or just HD remasters into the World In Conflict engine, make 2 play a bit more like 1)

Shogo: Mobile ArmoUr Division.

Legacy Of Kain / Soul Reaver.

And as for Hostile Waters, one of the original devs is porting the game into the unreal engine. Updates are sparse but progress looks good.

Interstate '76! One of my all time favorite games, it was Mech Warrior 2 with muscle cars and a '70's setting.

I really like the idea of projects like "Renegade-X"… Taking a game that was a bit rubbish and trying to breathe new life into it.

No offence to the people who loved the game – You've still got a great taste!

Anachronox! Oh wait, that's on the list? Yippee! (Hopefully if it does get picked up it will be by someone with experience.)

.

My first self-purchased video game as a child was 'Threads of Fate', another SE title and one that was set up for a sequel. Its light fare, but good fun. Of the two leads, the male lead Rue is super generic, but Mint, the girl, is probably one of my favorite protagonists ever. I love that game dearly and would love to see a remake or sequel.

.

How about a new Jade Empire? The game was a bit flawed, but where it was good it was really good. A good plot, a great world to explore and for a black and white morality system, a pretty decent one. I don't really like Bioware's new games, but I would like to see a return to the world regardless.

.

There are a lot of games I cherish from when I was younger, but I think a lot of them should stay in the past, maybe inspire spiritual successors. There are some things I am not sure you can really recreate.

.

EDIT: Also bring back Battlefield 2142!

Jurassic park operation genesis. I feel like that was the only true Jurassic park game ever because it's the only one where you could actually build a Jurassic park.
