The Total War staple of Paper/scissors/stone in battle tactics is present. They have moved the combat away from the Sword spam of Rome II more towards the balance of Shogun 2. Fear armies are now viable and you can breach city gates with melee units. In the solo campaign, you must not over exert yourself as doing so alerts you to other nations who have an inherent hated of powerful empires and more often than not, gang up on you. You have to be savy.

Smaller armies are better for the campaign than larger ones.

As the Danes. You cannot defend your home province at the start. Other Vikings surround you. So, Abandon your settlement. Take your army and navy over to the British Isles. Takes 3 turns and you have no Seasickness fatigue. Take a look at Tuesis (Scotland) If it is not protected, hire every mercenary you can and storm that place. If its defended, go over to Wales where the Romans always leave it unguarded and get some Lead for your trouble. Start your game from there.

Can you get away with just rushing the enemy in Total War: ATTILA?

Fear plays a huge part. Lots of new units emanate fear and staking fear units in your centre and charging with flaming arrows as support works. It never gets old.

As a Migrating faction, you HAVE to think several moves ahead or you will get caught out with the new integrity system. playing as a horde (mobile city) Changes things from the rather sterile Total War formula of "Attack place, keep place". It freshens things up and is the most interesting part of the game for me.

How well does Total War: ATTILA portray ancient Rome?

The absolute chaos of the time is perfectly portrayed. The world is so up in the air and you cannot predict whats gonna happen. In my game the Elba (Irish) ended up holding most of Spain. The Vikings went on a crazy rampage through to the Ukraine. Britain remained in the hands of Romano-British upstarts and then to top it off, The Vandals just hung out in Egypt for the entire game. That was just the first game i played...
