Unreal Tournament: Game of the Year Edition Review

How gory is Unreal Tournament: Game of the Year Edition?

At the time of release, there was a bit of an arms race going on amongst the shooters. Soldier of Fortune released the following year, which says it all really. UT's gore matched the tone of the game as a whole - boorish, and not to be taken too seriously.

I remember the decapitated headshots seeming pretty extreme to a 13-year-old Phil. These days the gore's all a bit too abstract and low-detail to have any impact. They're a reminder of The Gib Years.

Why does Unreal Tournament: Game of the Year Edition feel retro?

Very much so now. Visually, contemporary games haven't begun to imitate this aesthetic yet in an attempt to conjure 'retro', but there's something unavoidably dating about the soundtrack, the shoulderpads, the smack talk ("My house!" "Try a bigger gun!" ad nauseum) and above all the way UT feels the need to guide you through Capture The Flag mode like it's an alien concept.

Does the setting of Unreal Tournament: Game of the Year Edition feel original?

Far future. Criminals and lowlifes forced into a lucrative fighting tournament by an oppressive mining corporation - in wider media there are footprints in the snow here, but for games in 1999 it was an original enough dystopia. More importantly, it was a brilliantly minimal setup that perfectly hosted UT's concept.

How good an FPS is Unreal Tournament: Game of the Year Edition?

At the time, the champ. Epic (MEGAGAMES, lest we forget) really allowed themselves some imagination with UT's armory, and a great many of them are now hall of famers. Sorry, GES Biorifle, you're not one of them.

Weapon feedback is still good - evidenced nowhere better than the sniper rifle's decapitations and the pulse rifle secondary attacks' 'arms in the air' electrocution animation.

How much fun are the weapons in Unreal Tournament: Game of the Year Edition?

See above, really. I've never been a big fan of UT's slower, lumpen rocket launcher vs Quake's, but that's never been much of a problem when the flak cannon is just a mousewheel away.

The real question is: are people still playing this 17-year-old shooter online?

Yep. Yes they are. Not in great numbers, admittedly, but UT's endearingly retro server browser usually has at least one fully populated server and plenty below it with adequate numbers.
